Williamsburg Outlet Mall (Virginia)
6401 Richmond Road Williamsburg, Virginia 23188Information & Events - Williamsburg Outlet Mall
Williamsburg Outlet Mall was an outlet shopping center located at 6401 Richmond Road in Williamsburg, Virginia. It was situated in the Lightfoot area, just outside the city of Williamsburg, which is known for its rich colonial history and as a popular tourist destination. The region around the mall is a mix of suburban communities and tourist attractions, with easy access to major highways such as Route 199 and Richmond Road. The area is also relatively close to the Virginia coastline, making it accessible for visitors traveling between historic sites, beaches, and residential neighborhoods.
The mall originally opened in 1983 under the name Outlets Ltd. and featured about 40 stores within a 250,000-square-foot complex. It offered a typical outlet mix including fashion apparel, footwear, and some specialty retail, although it was smaller and less diverse compared to larger outlet centers. Over time, the mall experienced declining traffic and store closures, leading to its closure in late 2013. Afterward, most of its stores relocated to the nearby Williamsburg Premium Outlets, which is a larger and more modern outlet center located several miles away on the same Richmond Road corridor.
Following the closure, the original Williamsburg Outlet Mall was demolished in 2014. The site was redeveloped into a marketplace anchored by grocery and pharmacy stores such as Harris Teeter and Walgreens, which opened around 2016. This redevelopment shifted the property from an outlet shopping focus to a more community-oriented retail center.
While operational, the Williamsburg Outlet Mall provided basic amenities including parking and food options typical of outlet malls, but it did not have the extensive luxury brand offerings or large-scale dining and entertainment services found in larger premium outlet centers. Its location made it convenient for both local shoppers and tourists visiting the Williamsburg area, but it ultimately could not compete with newer retail developments nearby.
In summary, Williamsburg Outlet Mall was a modest-sized outlet shopping center serving the Williamsburg area until its closure in 2013 and subsequent redevelopment into a marketplace. It was located in a suburban tourist region with good highway access, but it no longer exists as a retail outlet mall today.
The Williamsburg Outlet Mall is one of the popular outlet malls in Virginia with more than 34 stores. The outlet center you can visit at: 6401 Richmond Road Williamsburg, Virginia 23188.
